Cubitts — Toogood

For Toogood, spectacles are not an accessory – they’re an extension of identity, a sculptural act of self-editing. For Cubitts, they are artefacts of precise engineering, refined through centuries of optical design. Together, the collaboration creates a pair of frames that blur disciplines, bringing fashion, furniture, and function into satisfying conversation.

#Collaboration

The collaboration began not with a sketch, but with tinfoil, clay, tape – the tactile tools of the Toogood studio. From these instinctive maquettes, Cubitts developed custom acetates and translated the raw ideas into two highly refined silhouettes.

Drawing from Toogood’s extensive materials library, Cubitts developed limited-edition acetates that mirror the tactility and experimentation of Toogood’s furniture and clothing. These are frames that carry the DNA of the studio – expressive, intuitive, and completely individual. Each frame was handcrafted using premium Mazzucchelli cellulose acetate – a material known for its depth, richness, and adaptability. Carefully selected for its sculptural potential, this acetate is uniquely receptive to hand-finishing, allowing for the creation of softened contours, subtle undulations, and a tactility reminiscent of natural materials like stone, wood, or fabric. The result is sunglasses that feel as considered in the hand as they look on the face – a true expression of material artistry.

The Sculptor is an oversized rounded panto defined by soft curves and confident detailing. Its pronounced browline introduces playful structure, while the delicate oyster tone lends a quiet sophistication. Flared temples extend with intention, offering a sense of balance and fluidity. Rounded and organic, it features extensively hand-softened edges, creating an almost pillowlike effect throughout the frame – from the gently contoured lens profile to the flared temple tips. Finished with double-dot rivet hinges and sculpted lugs, it’s precision tailoring for the face – expressive, refined, and effortlessly poised.

The Sculptor

The Tailor’s oversized shield-style form in rich Molasses acetate is both composed and commanding, offering a bold yet nuanced take on modern eyewear. Defined by its distinctive “Sad Eye” silhouette, the frame balances architectural structure with refined sculptural detail. A hand-chamfered lens profile creates a sense of depth and shadow play, while flared, hand-curved temples add a sculptural dynamic to its overall form. Pronounced lugs and double dot rivet hinges ground the frame in craftsmanship, marrying expressive design with precise construction.

Spectacles are, as Toogood puts it, “an invitation to shift shape.” Much like the Toogood wardrobe, these frames invite transformation, rebellion, and daily redefinition.
