Moray takes inspiration from Eileen Gray’s early lacquerwork, a skill developed from studying with Japanese artisan Seizo Sugawara.

This traditional craft required painting a thin layer of lacquer over a prepared base, before leaving it to dry in a warm, dust-free environment, polished smooth with several grades of pumice, and then repeated at least a dozen times.

Used to adorn her geometric screens, this meticulous and usually-ornamental process was brought for the first time into the realm of modernist design.
